Winter Car Servicing: Get Ready for Canberra’s Coldest Months
June 16, 2026
Categories:
Canberra winters are no joke. With sub-zero overnight temperatures, icy roads and heavy frosts a regular reality in the ACT, July is when your vehicle works harder than at any other time of year — and when neglected maintenance is most likely to leave you stranded.
The good news is that a winter service check doesn’t need to be complicated. A few key inspections now can make all the difference between a reliable start on a frosty morning and a call to roadside assist.
Here’s what our team at Gerald Slaven recommends checking before the worst of winter sets in.

Why a Winter Service Matters in Canberra
Canberra’s climate is unique in Australia. We’re one of the only major cities that regularly experiences black ice, heavy frost and prolonged below-zero conditions. That means cold-weather vehicle wear — the kind that’s easy to overlook during the warmer months — shows up fast once July arrives.
Addressing these checks now helps keep you, your passengers and other road users safe throughout the season.

What to Check This Winter
1. Battery Health
Your battery works hardest in cold weather. Low temperatures reduce the battery’s ability to hold charge, and a battery that’s borderline during summer can fail entirely on a frosty July morning. If your vehicle is slow to turn over or your battery is more than three years old, it’s worth having it tested before the cold really bites.
Our service team can carry out a battery health check as part of your winter service.
2. Heating, Demisting & Climate Control
A properly functioning heater isn’t just about comfort — it’s a safety essential. Effective demisting keeps your windscreen and rear window clear, which is critical when frosty mornings mean every minute counts before school or work.
If your heater is blowing cold, your demister is sluggish, or your climate control hasn’t been checked recently, now is the time to have it looked at.
3. Tyres: Tread, Pressure & Condition
Icy and wet roads dramatically reduce stopping distances, and worn tyres make a bad situation worse. ACT road conditions in winter — particularly in outlying suburbs and on the way to the snowfields — demand that your tyres are in good shape.
Check your tread depth across the full width of each tyre, and don’t forget to adjust your tyre pressure. Cold air causes pressure to drop, so what was correct in summer may now be underinflated. If you’re heading to Thredbo or Perisher this season, carry snow chains if your vehicle doesn’t have suitable all-terrain tyres.
4. Engine Coolant (Antifreeze)
Your coolant does double duty — it prevents your engine from overheating in summer, and from freezing in winter. The correct coolant-to-water ratio is critical for ACT temperatures. If your coolant hasn’t been changed in a while, or you’re unsure of its freeze point, our technicians can test and top up the system as part of a winter service.
5. Windscreen Wipers & Washer Fluid
Frost and winter rain are tough on wiper blades. If they’re leaving streaks or juddering across the glass, they need replacing. It’s a small fix with a big safety impact. Also check that your washer fluid reservoir is topped up with a winter-rated formula — plain water can freeze in the jets and reservoir overnight.
6. Lights
Shorter days mean you’re driving in the dark more often. Check that all your exterior lights are working — headlights (low and high beam), brake lights, reverse lights and indicators. Driving with a blown globe isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a safety risk and can attract a fine.
