The 2022 Golf R

August 24, 2022

The 2022 Golf R offers you a driving experience unlike any other because of the way it combines speed and refinement. With the new R-performance torque vectoring 4MOTION® all-wheel drive and the 315 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque in the optional 7-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic gearbox, it exhilarates and enchants with something for everyone and then some.

Some things are better experienced than described. The Volkswagen Golf R is one of them. This is one of the most eagerly anticipated new machines of 2022, and it delivers the thrills and luxury you’d expect from a more premium car. With increased power, better traction, road handling, and great looks, the Golf R has raised the ante with styling that takes its cue from motorsport, new driver technologies, and a list of premium driver and passenger comforts; the Volkswagen Golf R is built to be experienced.

Styling

It wowed us with its performance and enchanted us with its exterior design, all in a package that offers intelligently integrated technology in addition to being a tonne of fun to drive.

The optional sunroof adds to the sporty look, as do the muscular presence of the rear diffuser and chrome tailpipes. The headlamp and bonnet combination attracts your attention to the flared front end. Due to the lack of excessive road noise and vibrations, the sporty and responsive ride and handling are both engaging and comfortable.

The Golf’s interior design is in keeping with its outward style, with subtle sporty hints. Body-hugging Nappa leather seats with blue accents, a perforated leather steering wheel with a flat bottom, alloy pedals, and simulated carbon fibre details. Ambient lighting improves mood after dark, and a digital panel in front of the driver can be customised to fit individual preferences.

Overall, there is sufficient room for four adults to ride comfortably, and the boot now has a 374-litre capacity, up 30L over the previous Golf R.

Performance

The 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine powering the Golf R produces 315 horsepower, up from 288 horsepower in the previous generation. Either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available.

The classic EA888 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which made its debut in 2006, is under the hood, though, in its current fourth generation, it is far more potent. The Mk8 Golf R now sends its 235kW of power and 400 Nm of torque to all four corners via a refreshed version of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. For enthusiasts, a Drift Mode that can transfer 100% of the torque to an outside rear wheel has been included, enabling real skids.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s latest IQ. Drive safety package provides all the basics: autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention warning, park assist and front and back parking sensors.

The Volkswagen Golf R is swift and nimble to drive and easy to live with. All enthusiasts would love its understated styling, new all-wheel drive system, and breadth of performance.

Precision Handling and Control

The R has a classic GTI fluidity and a sense of flexible, apparent reaction at first encounter. But if you exert more force, the more powerful car reveals its tighter body control, quicker steering, and more precise turn-in. In plain terms, the R grips and moves when you turn the wheel. The Golf R improves the harder you drive it, standing up straight and coming to life just when earlier models would crumble. The handling is crisp and pure, feels light and agile as it darts towards an apex, and because of its four-wheel-drive system, there is no tugging at the wheel you experience in front-wheel-drive cars.

Technology

Compared to its predecessor, the new Golf R provides more driver-assistance features, like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and blind-spot monitoring. Automatic emergency braking and front collision warning as standard features, lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode are also available.
